Rescued Kitten Overcomes the Odds with Smiling Purrsonality and Will to Thrive

Kitten With Toothy Smile Was Brought Back From the Brink and Fights to Live

In the middle of December 2017, a discovery was made of three small kittens hidden behind a building. The property manager reached out to Friends for Life Rescue Network, a volunteer-run rescue group established by Jacqueline Santiago and Cristina Figueroa, for assistance. “I spotted these three little gray kittens scurrying between the narrow gap of two buildings. They appeared to be quite young,” Jacqueline shared with Love Meow.

Jacqueline deployed a drop trap from her car and lured the kittens out with a trail of wet food. After moments of hesitation, the kittens finally emerged but refused to go towards the trap. Adjusting her tactics, Jacqueline placed the food closer to their hiding spot and managed to snatch them up. Despite a moment of panic, they successfully rescued all three kittens.

Unfortunately, one of the kittens, Bear, passed away that night. Devastated, they refocused their efforts on caring for the remaining two kittens, Wolfie and Foxy.

Wolfie, the runt of the litter, weighed a mere 15oz, half the size of his sibling. The kittens were in need of warmth, food, and flea treatment to ensure their well-being. After tending to their immediate needs, they were able to finally settle down for the night in comfort.

“We were completely unaware of Wolfie’s health issues initially. Despite his cute overbite and being a bit thin, he seemed to have a good appetite.”
However, a few days later, Wolfie started feeling lethargic and couldn’t hold any food down. He was barely holding on. At one point, he even stopped breathing and was struggling for air. He was immediately put in an oxygen chamber and later an x-ray confirmed that his esophagus was completely obstructed.

Friends for Life Rescue Network shared a story about a unique medical case that had the vets at the clinic scratching their heads. While at the emergency room, the doctors suggested euthanasia, but the pet owner was determined to save their furry friend. With no clear diagnosis from the doctor, the decision was made to keep fighting for the pet’s life.

The Friends for Life Rescue Network successfully conducted an endoscopy to remove the debris from little Wolfie’s system. After hours of waiting, Wolfie finally regained consciousness. Upon opening his eyes, he let out a small but optimistic squeak. Jacqueline was touched by his resilience, knowing that both she and Wolfie were determined to keep fighting.

Friends for Life Rescue Network shared their experience of taking care of Wolfie, a little kitten in need of help. They were advised to feed him kitten milk and hold him upright after every meal, feeding him every two hours. Just before his CT scan, Wolfie began to show signs of improvement. He started gaining weight and became stronger, more active, playful, and curious about the world around him. The once scrawny kitten had turned into a content and well-fed kitty.

“Following his CT scan, the vet identified a condition in which a tissue growth was causing Wolfie’s esophagus to become very narrow. Until he reaches a healthy weight for surgery, he will need to be on a liquid diet,” Jacqueline shared with Love Meow.
Thanks to the dedicated support of multiple foster families who are providing round-the-clock care, Wolfie is doing incredibly well!

“He currently weighs in at one pound and 14 ounces, with steady weight gain. His belly is impressively large! His adorable overbite and tendency to stick out his tongue make him irresistible. He gets a kick out of chasing balls, which are his favorite toys.
“Every time I plant a kiss on his face, he pretends to act tough by opening his mouth as if to bite, but it’s all for show. Such a little faker!”
